Beauty-Boosting Spirulina & Collagen Smoothie

Spirulina, a blue-green algae with a long-established reputation as a superfood, has recently resurfaced as a highly regarded dietary supplement. This algal species has been used as a food source throughout history by ancient civilizations, including the Aztecs and various African tribes, due to its exceptional nutritional value.

In modern times, Spirulina has garnered significant attention from the wellness community due to its impressive nutritional profile. This exceptional plant-based protein source contains all the essential amino acids necessary for optimal health. Additionally, Spirulina is rich in various vitamins and minerals, such as B-vitamins, iron, magnesium, and potassium, making it a highly valuable dietary supplement.

Numerous studies suggest that Spirulina's potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties may aid in reducing oxidative stress and inflammation, both of which are significant factors linked to the development of chronic diseases. Furthermore, Spirulina is known to support the immune system, improve gut health, and enhance cardiovascular function.

This elixir is an alluring way to incorporate the superfood into your diet while indulging in a refreshing and delectable beverage. The addition of Spirulina not only enhances the smoothie's nutritional profile, but also lends it a stunning green hue. This smoothie serves as the perfect pick-me-up for whenever you need a boost of energy and nutrients, leaving you feeling revitalized, recharged, and radiating with inner beauty.

Beauty-Boosting Spirulina & Collagen Smoothie Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1 ½ cup coconut water (use less coconut water for a thicker smoothie or smoothie bowl)

  • 1 small ripe banana

  • ½ a cucumber peeled (you can leave the peel on, but it can add a slightly bitter taste)

  • 1 date - (slice 1/4″-1/8″ lengthwise down into the date. Pull open the date, and remove the seed)

  • ½ cup blueberries frozen

  • ½ cup pineapple chunks frozen

  • 1 - 1 ½ inch knob ginger root peeled

  • 2 heaping cups of spinach

  • 2 leveled tsp of spirulina

  • 1 tsp freshly squeezed lemon juice (optional)

  • 1 scoop of collagen powder (optional)

  • Hemp seeds to garnish (desired amount - optional)

Directions:

Time: 5 minutes | Serves: 1

Add all of the ingredients into a blender and blend on high for 45-60 seconds to make it into a smooth mixture. If you prefer it on the chunkier side, then blend it for less time. Finally, pour the smoothie into your favourite glass and enjoy!

Recommendations:

  • If you can, always try to use organic produce and ingredients. Organic products meet strict national standards, and the “Canada Organic” logo is the public’s assurance that products have been grown and handled according to strict procedures and rules. Organic is the most heavily regulated and scrutinized food system in Canada.

  • When choosing collagen, it’s always a good idea to select one with a full amino acid profile. My favourite brand to use is Total Body Collagen. As it contains vitamin C, hyaluronic acid, biotin, L-glutamine and L-tryptophan for a complete amino acid profile.

  • To make this smoothie more substantial, pour it into a bowl and add your favorite fruits, nuts, and seeds on top as a garnish. This transforms it into a delicious smoothie bowl. Refer to Image 02 for an example.
